After the second straight week in theaters, Iron Man continues to rule the box office.
Weekend tally's show Iron Man took in $50 million in ticket sales. If you break it down even further, that comes to about $12,284 per theater at 4,111 locations. After only 10 days, its total box office sales amount to $177 million. Speed Racer and What Happens in Vegas both debuted this weekend. So far, Speed Racer finished in second place with $20.2 million while What Happens in Vegas grabbed third with $20 million.
Despite high expectations, Speed Racer failed to live up to its hype. The Warner Bros. big budget film was expected to be a runaway hit but came up short. Dan Fellman is the president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. In reference to the film, Fellman said: "We were disappointed with the results over the weekend. We're hoping, optimistically, that the movie can turn it around and sustain an audience into the summer but only time will tell at this early stage."
"Vegas", which starred Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz made about $6,221 per theater in 3,215 compared to Speed Racer which pulled in $5,605 in 3,606 locations. Twentieth Century Fox, which released Vegas, said that the film's numbers were a "great result" and surpassed their expectations, especially due to the fact that it only cost $35 million to make.
Rounding out the top 5 films for the weekend were "Made of Honor" with Patrick Dempsey and "Baby Mama" with Saturday Night Live's Tina Fey.
